Astigmatism

What is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is an optical condition usually produced when certain corneal parts bend light into the eye steeper than others. This optical irregularity results in poorly focused images projections within the eye. Correction in most cases is with spectacles or contacts although Laser Vision Correction or LASIK for astigmatism is a more modern and highly successful treatment method.

People with astigmatism may have a difficult time seeing objects near or far. Objects will generally appear blurry or distorted.

The following are common symptoms associated with astigmatism:

  • Headaches
  • Difficulty reading up close or far away
  • Trouble seeing at night
  • Need to squint to bring objects into focus

Anyone can get astigmatism, young or old. Some people may have slight variations of astigmatism and not even realize anything is wrong with their vision.
