    Cataract Surgery Recovery

Cataract surgery is an intraocular operation that can improve degraded visual acuity. As with any operation healing after cataract surgery can depend on many associated health factors such as age, coexisting diabetes, age related retinal degeneration, ocular circulatory and other health conditions.

While only a patient’s eye surgeon can advise exact instructions for post cataract surgery care, there are general guidelines for after care that could apply.

What to Expect After Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery recovery times are different for everyone, but typically there should be vision by the next day. You can expect to resume most of your normal activities within a day, although most surgeons suggest that you don’t drive for 24 hours after the procedure.

After the surgery, your eye surgeon will usually talk to you about:

    • Medications and drops prescribed for you
    • Instructions for eye care
    • Arranging a follow-up meeting the next day after surgery

A stinging or gritty feeling after surgery is normal, though after 1 or 2 days any moderate discomfort should disappear. Avoid rubbing or putting pressure on your eyes.

    Post Cataract Surgery Activities

Reading, walking, watching TV, or other light activities are permissible, but patients should avoid strenuous activities, such as heavy lifting, for at least a week.

It is always good to stay physically fit, however steams showers, whirlpools, and swimming should be put off until advised by your eye surgeon.
